Portrait Commissions · Oil & Charcoal
Painted in the classical atelier tradition — each portrait is a record of a particular person at a particular moment, made to last generations. Worked from your photographs, or from life for clients in the New York area.
Selected Work
Adults, children, families — painted in oil or charcoal from life or photographic reference.
"I treasure my portrait from Chris Eastland and equally the creative process and fun times as we worked together. My late Mother also loved the portrait Chris painted of me. It had a prominent place in her apartment and now in our house."— James Cabot
"The portrait of Chuck is SO beautiful — it is the centerpiece of my living room in San Francisco."— Seldy Cramer
"We have the girls' portrait in our kitchen. I love it here because I can enjoy it while I'm cooking — which is frequently."— Amy Pruitt
Subjects
Adults and children, individually or in family groupings. Each portrait is sized and composed to suit the subject and the room it's intended for.
Posthumous portraits painted from photographic references, created with care and discretion for families who want to honor someone they've lost.
Boards of directors, university presidents, judges, retiring executives, major donors. Formal portraits in the tradition of official portraiture.
Oil portraits of dogs, cats, and beloved animals of all kinds — a dedicated offering alongside my portrait work. Visit pets.chriseastlandartist.com to commission a pet portrait.
The Process
From first inquiry to finished painting, every commission follows the same careful sequence.
Inquiry & Proposal
Reach out with the subject, size, and occasion. If it's a good fit, I send a fixed-price proposal. A 40% deposit secures your place and starts the commission.
First Session
We meet at my Brooklyn studio or your location. We collaborate on clothing, setting, and composition. I take reference photographs and may begin drawn or painted sketches from life.
Painting
The work proceeds over weeks to months depending on scale. I share progress images throughout. A final sitting may be arranged for last touches and corrections.
Delivery
Balance is due on completion. The finished portrait is varnished, framed if included, and shipped carefully packed — ready to hang.
Investment
Each commission is priced individually based on size, complexity, number of figures, and whether the work is painted from life or photographs.
Starting from
$5,000
Prices subject to change. I respond to every inquiry within two business days.
About the Artist
Chris Eastland trained for seven years at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, where he studied — and later taught — the sight-size method of oil painting in the Florentine atelier tradition. He now works from his Brooklyn studio on portraits, landscapes, and pet portraits.
